Meet Mark

Grounded in Hard Work

Raised by a single mom and public school teacher in Kalamazoo, Mark learned the value of hard work early on. When his dad left, he stepped up to help his family. In the seventh grade, Mark started delivering newspapers. Later he worked at the local library and stocked groceries overnight at Meijer as a proud UFCW member, which helped him pay his way through college.

Rooted in Faith and Service

Mark grew up in the church, where his commitment to justice and service took root. By age 15 he was preaching on occasion and helping lead his church youth group.  Through high school and college, Mark even thought he’d go into the ministry. But the law was where he found he could do the most good – protecting people, not the powerful. Mark felt called to serve justice.

A Career of Fighting for Justice

After graduating from Yale Law School in 2006, Mark began his career at the U.S. Department of Justice, handling civil appeals. He later served as a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, where he worked on national security cases among other matters.

Returning home to Michigan, Mark taught at Michigan State University College of Law, focusing on criminal law and consumer protection, while serving part of that time as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, handling criminal appeals.

In 2018, then Governor-Elect Gretchen Whitmer asked Mark to serve as her Chief Legal Counsel, which he did for more than three years. Among other accomplishments, Mark led the Governor’s successful legal fight to protect reproductive freedom, an effort he launched the day he learned the Supreme Court would hear the Dobbs case, which would ultimately overturn Roe. He also played a lead role defending Michigan’s election results in 2020 and securing stronger protections for workers.

In 2022, Mark was nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, where he became the chief federal law enforcement officer for 49 of Michigan’s 83 counties.

Mark has led major prosecutions that addressed violent crime across Michigan. In Lansing and Grand Rapids, he prosecuted adults who trafficked or possessed illegal guns that led to the deaths of children. He held domestic abusers accountable, including a Muskegon man who threatened to torture and kill his ex-wife. He secured a conviction against a domestic terrorist who planted pipe bombs at cell phone stores in Sault Ste. Marie and Cheboygan.  He also dismantled a criminal network trafficking machine-gun conversion devices across southwest Michigan.

Protecting children has always been a top priority. Mark prosecuted members of an international sextortion ring whose scheme led to the tragic death of 17-year-old Jordan DeMay from Marquette. The case marked the first-ever extradition from Nigeria for sextortion crimes and set a national standard for how such cases are handled.

Mark has taken on hate and discrimination, prosecuting white supremacists who plotted violence and hateful acts. He also held accountable an arsonist who tried to burn down a Planned Parenthood clinic. He has pursued public corruption, including the conviction of a former Speaker of the Michigan House who accepted bribes while regulating the marijuana industry — a case the Detroit News called “the largest federal corruption case in Michigan’s capital in a generation.”

Mark has protected seniors by dismantling international fraud rings that stole millions from vulnerable adults, including nearly $400,000 from a Lake County resident. He’s also gone after corporate polluters, leading one of the nation’s largest cases targeting a scheme to disable emissions equipment on semi-trucks.

With a proven record of taking on powerful interests and delivering justice for Michiganders, Mark is ready to bring his experience to the Attorney General’s Office—fighting for working families, protecting the vulnerable, and ensuring no one is above the law.

A Commitment to Michigan Families

Mark is a husband, father, and proud Michigander. His wife, Kristin, is an attorney who has dedicated her career to fighting for justice, serving as an advocate for children with disabilities, a public defender, and now a prosecutor protecting children in abuse and neglect cases. Together, they are raising two children, Jake and Grace, and share a love for Michigan’s outdoors, having camped and backpacked all across the state.

Mark is running for Attorney General to continue his service protecting the people of Michigan. He’s ready to win, having served as the top federal law enforcement officer across the majority of Michigan’s counties. He’s ready to lead, having served at the highest levels of state and federal government in Michigan. And he has the integrity this job demands.
